With earlier sewer developments, more branch pipes were often laid to connect plots of land and rainwater inlets than were subsequently needed. Nowadays, the unused branch pipes frequently have leaks, meaning they do not meet the legal demands for watertight sewer systems. This means there is a need to subsequently seal these. This is also the case in the city of Erfurt, which is using Schwalm’s own sealing plug system, which is protected by a utility patent. In August 2013, Schwalm employees Andreas Breul and Ronny Weißbrich spent four weeks in the state capital of Thuringia and have already sealed 174 unused blind connections in the ground. Now in October, the specialists of Schwalm Kanalsanierung will be returning to Erfurt for another four weeks to insert some more sealing plugs.

Schwalm has developed a system for this, using which these faulty and blind connections can be retrospectively sealed permanently. To do this, a sealing plug is inserted into the pipe connection using either the Talpa FSR 1330 or Talpa FSR 2060 robot and is then braced in one single process. The plug works using the principle of a Thermos flask plug and is available in different sizes.
