Digital World 4.0

Statement Martin Schwalm

Even during the scorching summer of 2018, it’s on everyone’s lips: Digitalization! Or if it needs to sound more modern: 4.0! Everything should be 4.0. Management 4.0, Communication 4.0, Industry 4.0. At the moment, we are grappling with building applications, which can go on for months, decrepit bridges on motorways and a lack of fiber-optic provision for industrial estates. The question is, which tasks are yet to be completed to be able to say with a clean conscience that we have already lived through 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. Let’s assume that the known and long-overdue plans for the development of the data networks become a reality. We as a company would still be faced with the challenge of finding a suitable digitalization strategy for ourselves. It is certain that most of the established processes from the 1.0 world are not digitalized. Why? Please ask yourself what companies such as Agfa, Kodak or Brockhaus would have needed to do in order to be as successful and popular today. It’s simple: They would have had to think about whether their core competences would still be in demand in the future. We’re talking about the most difficult challenge that can be put to us. Is everything that we have already been doing correctly and successfully, still the right thing to do in the digital era? Here at Schwalm Robotic and Schwalm Kanalsanierung, we ask ourselves this question. And that’s a good thing. Of course we don’t have the winning formula, but we are an open company and will make use of the opportunities that digitalization has to offer. On a smaller and on a larger scale. However, we are not forgetting that: Our core competences will still be in robotics in the future, particularly in the fields of systems for partial sewer rehabilitation, providing sewer cleaning and waste disposal and trenchless partial sewer rehabilitation. We are becoming more digital step by step.
